How to Wash Wigs

To prolong the lifespan of your wig, proper care is key. We recommend detangling your wig often with a wide tooth comb to help manage tangles and knots. (Use a good detangling spray, too!) When you’re not wearing your wig, store it on a wig stand or box. But above all, you need to wash your wig every six to eight wears with care products specially formulated for your wig fiber type.

Not only does washing your wig help keep it looking beautiful but it also helps reduce shedding and frizzing. Plus, it helps restore your wig’s luster. Join us as we explain how to wash wigs like a pro.

What You Need for Washing Your Wig

Before you wash your wig, you’ll need to collect the proper supplies to get started:

Wide tooth Comb - for detangling and combing your wig

Towel - to remove excess water

Folding Wig Stand - to allow the wig to dry

Blow Dryer - only to be used for human hair wigs

Round Brush - only to be used for human hair wigs

Once you have your supplies, you can begin washing your wig!

How to Wash Synthetic & Human Hair Wigs

Step 1: Detangle. Before you start washing your wig, it’s important to detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb. Carefully comb through the hair by starting at the ends and working your way up toward the root to decrease shedding.

Step 2: Rinse. Using lukewarm water, rinse your wig from roots to ends. Avoid soaking or rubbing because it could lead to tangling.

Step 3: Shampoo. Take the shampoo that’s specially made for your wig’s fiber type and work it through your hands. Then, distribute a small amount evenly through the hair. Use circular motions when you clean the cap.

Step 4: Condition. Take your leave-in conditioner and spray the hair from mid-shaft to ends. Avoid conditioning the roots and knots as it can loosen the fibers and cause tangles and mats. (If you’re washing a human hair wig, use a deep conditioner if the fibers feel dry or are damaged).

Step 5: Rinse. When rinsing out your wig, allow the lukewarm water to flow in the same direction as the hair to prevent tangling. Remember to squeeze and press the hair. Do not wring the hair.

Step 6: Dry. Towel blot the hair to remove any excess water. Then, gently part the hair with a comb before your wig dries. Place your wig on a folding wig stand to air dry. (This step is different for human hair wigs. Blow the hair dry about 80% then round brush until smooth).

Once your wig is completely dry, you can wear it again or store it safely in its box or wig stand.

How to Wash Curly Wigs

Washing curly wigs requires a different method compared to straight and wavy styles. While you still use the same supplies, the washing technique varies. But never fear! Our helpful guide will have you washing your curly hair in no time!

Step 1: Detangle. To prepare your wig for washing, spray the hair with water and detangling spray. Use a wide tooth comb and detangle the hair. Never use a brush.

Step 2: Rinse. Use cool running water to wet your wig.

Step 3: Shampoo. Using the shampoo specified for your wig’s fiber type, run the product through the hair in a downward raking-like motion.

Step 4: Rinse Again. Rinse the shampoo out of your wig with cool running water until it runs clear. Then, gently squeeze out any excess water.

Step 5: Condition. Avoiding the roots and knots, spray the hair fibers with leave-in conditioners from mid-strand to ends. Then gently comb out the hair with a wide tooth comb. You can even scrunch hair if desired.

Step 6: Dry & Style. Place your wig on a wig stand. While waiting for the hair to dry, 'finger style' your curls. You can even use a hairnet to help support the curls. Pro tip: To help preserve the curl’s volume, dry your wig upside.
